The Numbers Behind the Hype

We live in a world where hook-up culture is portrayed like a rite of passage—especially on college campuses, dating apps, and in media targeting women of color. But let’s slow down and look at what’s really happening.

According to a study in the Journal of Adolescent Health, 60–80% of college students have had at least one hook-up. But quantity doesn’t equal clarity or satisfaction. Many of these encounters are filled with confusion, regret, and physical aftereffects that no one talks about.

From That Good Good’s own Ultimate Vulva Survey, which gathered anonymous responses from hundreds of melanin-rich women:

🧴 84% reported experiencing odor, itching, or irritation after shaving or waxing—often done in preparation for hook-ups.

⚠️ 77% had tried 3 or more brands and still dealt with dark spots, ingrown hairs, or hyperpigmentation.

👩🏾⚕️ 91% wanted products that are pH-balanced and microbiome-safe, tailored to their actual biology—not a generic drugstore template.

👑 95% said they would trust a product tested on melanin-rich skin over something mass-produced for a Eurocentric “standard.”

Here’s the truth: hook-up culture isn’t just a personal choice—it’s often influenced by marketing, peer pressure, trauma responses, and unrealistic beauty standards that disproportionately affect women of color.

This isn’t just about sex. This is about systems.

This is about why That Good Good exists: to give you tools, care, and truth that center you—not ignore you.
